My Students

We are a charter school located in Chicago. My first grade class is comprised of 26 amazing students who are eager to learn. They are each unique in their own way and I always make sure my classroom environment allows for them to express their individuality. One of my greatest joys has been witnessing their confidence in the classroom grow tremendously since the beginning of the year. My students love using technology to learn. We currently have access to laptops twice a week, which has been an amazing experience for them, but twice a week is not enough and tablets are much more user friendly for students ages 6-7 than laptops. Introducing students to technology early is critical to making sure they are equipped with the necessary skills to help them succeed later in life.

My Project

My goal is to give my class of 26 daily access to at least 10 tablets. Giving students access to tablets will prepare them to succeed and help supplement their learning experience. Opening an app on a tablet is quicker and easier than typing in a website on a laptop, which will allow for students to have more time on an educational program. The educational programs will help increase understanding of math concepts and improve literacy. While some students are occupied with the tablets, it will allow time for me to work in small groups with other students who aren’t using the technology. Tablets are more developmentally appropriate for younger students as they provide wonderful educational programs that are interactive and are proven to lead to an increase in learner outcomes. I will be able to easily monitor students by walking around the classroom and glancing at their tablets. I can use real-time data to help improve my own instruction. I have already seen an increase in student response to their online reading and math programs during the small amount of time we have spent with the laptops. If most of my students can have quick and easy access to these programs, they will be excited and enthusiastic to continue their learning!
