Tablets Today, Readers Tomorrow!

My students need three tablets to be able to read online literature. These three will complete a set for a small group. Each group will have a tablet with an assigned classic novel.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each year I say to myself, "I'm going to build my library this year and bring the classics." However, every year I get let down by either the lack of funds or trying to spend my own money which I don't have. My students come to me with a passion for reading. They look for new chapter books that are high interest, but at least half lose their love of reading due to the shortage of the high interest books. These kids come from neighborhoods that are full of crime and has a liquor store in the middle of it. Our school is high poverty and is a Title I school.

My 5th graders are curious, creative and clever!

Here in Southern California, we have a reputation of being beautiful and warm. Well, that really doesn't explain the weather, it describes the kids! They come to school to be safe and get that feeling of belonging. Poverty or not, they come ready to learn. They come with the attitude of, "Today I will learn something new!" These children do not let their situation define their future!

My Project

As we all know, the future of our generation is computer orientated. Most tests and assessments are done online. In addition, the students are required to read long pieces of texts on desktops, iPads, or tablets. To prepare the students properly for future assessments (in this grade and beyond), they will read daily different novels on them. Each day, they will gather in their groups and perform different tasks, technology and reading will be one of them. Some days, they will read independently and some together as a group.

Focus, stamina and comprehension are 3 of the many needs my students need to be successful on the Smarter Balance Assessment and as they move grades!

Donating these tablets will supply them with what they need at school, whereas at home they, unfortunately, do not.
