I have the wonderful opportunity of working with the best group of young people at a Title 1 school in Brooklyn NY. What makes these young people remarkable is that despite the challenges presented by their economic disadvantages they face live head-on and fastidiously work toward being successful students who will one day make great contributions to their community.
Establishing a classroom where students take accountability for their own learning depends of having the appropriate tools that can capture students' attention and keep them engaged throughout the learning experience.
My fifth graders deserve the opportunity to develop both their literacy and numeracy skills, however we lack the resources that will help to make that happen.
Last school year several generous donors provided us with manipulatives that helped transform our math lab into an enriched and vibrant classroom that was constantly abuzz with math investigations. I am seeking your help again to take us to the next level where my tenacious group of math sleuths will have the opportunity to develop their ability to be reflective of their learning by assessing themselves and their peers.
My Project
As I strive to move away from a teacher-led classroom to a more student centered learning environment, I aim to encourage my students to take accountability for their own learning and give them the autonomy to learn at their own pace. An effective way to achieve that goal is to use tablets and specific apps to have student preview, review, complete and assess assigned tasks.
With the plethora of video lessons and apps created especially for the curriculum used by my school my student will be able to gain self efficacy by completing, assessing and reflecting on their own work.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
