Tablets Take Student Readers To The Next Level!

My students need computer tablets to access online leveled reading programs.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Rees's classroom raised $1,337

My Students

Our students are joyful, hard-working and inspirational in their stamina and resilience. They also make our school the most diverse school in the district! For example, in one classroom, there can be up to ten different languages represented. Because of where we are located, we also have a growing number of students who are in transitional housing. Whatever the challenge, our students are constantly learning from each other and inspiring one another through their differences and similarities.

The diversity of our students sets our school apart from others and has created an amazing school community!

This unique quality has also presented challenges in differentiating our instruction; specifically in reading and language arts. Approximately 42% of our student body is English language learner - from Newcomer status to proficient English level - and many of our students with transitional housing confront challenges that directly impact their reading proficiency.

My Project

The ten Amazon Fire-7 Tablets will allow all my readers, regardless of reading level, to access websites that offer differentiated levels of text, such as Front Row, Newsela and our district's online text database. Access to these sites will provide students with text that is written at different reading levels but collectively, address the same topic, which gives me the opportunity to lead a whole class discussion, assured that every student has been given the necessary information needed to actively participate.

Integrating computer tablets into our reading program is a key tool in helping students work towards realizing their full literacy potential.

The Fire-7 tablets will provide all of my students access to high quality text at their level which will ultimately make them better readers. While I am working with a small group of students, other students can work independently or in leveled reading groups, using these tablets to access assigned reading, at their independent reading level. Knowing that students are not struggling with content or fluency of a given text allows me to focus with the students in my small group and gives the other students the confidence to work independently. In addition, access to leveled reading on a tablet gives students the confidentiality often desired when reading at levels that are significantly below grade level. It is common in the 5th grade classroom that those who are reading at kindergarten, first, or second grade levels, for example, feel stigmatized and do not check out books that represent their independent reading ability. Instead, they check out books that give the illusion they are reading at levels that they believe mirror their classmates’. Lastly, access to certain websites will allow me to assess student comprehension in real-time so that I can make instructional decisions in a more timely manner.
