I am biased, but I teach the best students at the best school in the world. Our students face numerous challenges, but still work their hardest to achieve their goals daily.
Our school is a K-8 school, considered high poverty by the state, with roughly 700 students who are largely special needs or have a parent serving in the military.
We have the second highest population of special needs children, ESE children, and children who have a father, mother, or both parents in the military in our district.
We are a Title I school with minimal resources. Every teacher at our school works to provide our students with a first class education, while helping them to overcome the many obstacles in their lives.
Our students are in before and after school care, due to one or both parents serving in the military and often deploying. Our students experience the transient life of military families and are often having to adjust to new environments, expectations, and education standards. I strive to help my students transition fluidly and work hard to catch them up on the curriculum they've missed.
My Project
My first grant for tablets was funded, but the price of the tablets had increased, so I could not complete the set. Research shows that students find more success in school when they use technology. This is especially true with middle school students, who mainly believe their lives revolve around technology. With our technology driven world, these students need to become fluent with technology in order to find success later in life. Unfortunately, many of my students do not have access to technology at home. I am responsible for preparing these kids for what’s coming next in their lives, but I don’t currently have the resources to do that.
My students will use these tablets as a learning tool to improve their math understanding, fluency and ability.
These tablets will allow more students to interact with the online tutors at Zeal.com, complete individualized assignments on Khan academy and Prodigy, and complete Kahoot quizzes. These tablets will transform the way our classroom works.
We currently have two working student computers for 25 students to use and rotate through in 50 minutes. That gives each student 2 minutes of time to work with the technology. This just doesn’t work.
This grant will not be limited to benefiting a single student but all 120+ of my current students and the countless students to come. I will be able to monitor and control the skills being practiced by students, provide immediate feedback and allow multiple student groups to work on different subjects at once, helping to individualize the education experience even more. The tablet covers will help protect and prolong the lives of our devices. The charging station will help our classroom remain organized. With these tablets, my students will have the ability to access the multitude of interactive math practice programs online.
