Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are my joy. They are eager-to-learn 4-5 year olds who amaze me daily with their learning, despite the challenges they face. They are an extremely diverse group of learners; 87.4% of students at my school receive free or reduced lunch and 67.1% of students are English Language Learners. Burmese, Nepali, Spanish, and English are just a few of the languages my students in Aurora, Colorado come in knowing. Their diversity is amazing and it provides ample unique learning opportunities in our classroom.

The vision statement at my school is: "Embrace Genius, Empower Leaders."

We believe that every person has genius; my students and I work hard every day to discover the strengths in each other while empowering each other to lead.

My Project

Researchers Hart and Risley have found that by the age of 3, children of a lower socioeconomic status have heard 30 million less words than their more affluent peers (1). We also know that there are significantly fewer books in low-income homes. “Children from middle-income homes have on average 13 books per child. There is only one book for every 300 children in low-income neighborhoods.” (2) How can I make sure that I am doing everything I can to begin closing that word gap for my students? How can I ensure that my English Language Learners are being exposed to plenty language enrichment every day? What can I do to foster a love for children’s literature while also supplementing students’ language development? These are questions that guide my planning of each and every day in my kindergarten classroom.

We know that technology is an invaluable resource in the classroom.

Technology is engaging, educational, and so pertinent in developing 21st century skills in our students. Therefore, I am asking for five Amazon Fire tablets to serve as a listening center in my classroom. At the listening center, students will be able to access several “books on tape” (but nowadays we can access those books online instead!) They will be able to follow along with their favorite stories on the tablet, allowing them to hear even more stories to fall in love with. I am also asking for 5 over-the-ear headphones, cases, and a charging station to keep the management and use of the tablets running smoothly.

Your donation will help me do one of my favorite things-- teach my kindergarten students to love to explore books every day. Thank you.
