My Students

I make a lot of videos for my students to watch to learn mathematics. However, my students are the creative ones. When given the opportunity and resources, they can make some incredible videos that are informative, engaging, and hilarious. The issue: I don't have the resources they need.

At my small public charter school, I have the privilege of teaching students with many different backgrounds.

Many of my students must work while in school or have other substantial, yet unavoidable distractions to contend with while pursuing an education. However, they know the worth of a good education and are willing to work very hard for it. As a teacher, I am so encouraged every day by the hard work and dedication of my students. They have become dynamic learners out of necessity. My school doesn't have many resources. We receive little funding, and our building isn't the nicest. And yet, we are a Gold Medal school nonetheless. We owe that to our students who have created such a rich culture of learning and high standards.

My Project

My students need a tablet to use in class. The tablet needs a tough case to survive in class. My students also need headphones to listen to audio. In my mathematics classroom I utilize technology frequently. I flipped my Geometry class, meaning I create videos and activities that students can access as homework. This opens up time in class for more inquiry and engagement. I have learned that my students can produce videos just as well as me. Actually, their videos are usually much better than mine! I would like to provide a way for my students to watch and produce videos in my classroom. Currently, there is no way for a student to watch a video in my classroom if they do not have a smart phone. Having a class set of tablets will give my students access to these videos and other media. Also, it will give my students a tool for making screencasts and videos.

My students are clever.

They are very creative, and I want to encourage that creativity whenever I get the chance. A donation to this project would be exactly that--an encouragement to my students that their creativity is significant, and that they can use this creativity to truly take ownership of their mathematics education.
