My Students
I am the Middle School Visual Arts teacher at a charter school in Brooklyn Park, MN. Our school started very small and has grown to about 1,000 students in the last few years. Over 99% of our population is minority, learning English as a Second Language or immigrant families. My school serves a population where 80% of students qualify for free or reduced price lunch, and many would, without fundraising, never be able to attend field trips or extracurriculars.
Many of them come in to our building reading well below grade level or struggling with basic math skills, they come to us, study hard, turn their motivation towards setting goals, and go off to high school with a new love of learning.
My Project
We need five tablets to practice their digital art, look up pictures to draw from, and upload their artwork to online portfolios. It's so important when drawing to use reference material, and my students often have many ideas about the kind of images they'd like to look at, but we have no computers to search for images and ideas.
We have no way right now to implement digital art making into the classroom.
Many of my students love animation and would be so excited at the chance to try it out. We also would use these tablets to create and continually update our online classroom portfolios to keep families and the community informed about the art we are making and what we are learning about in class.
