My Students

There are over 70 languages/dialects spoken at West High School. Because I teach ESL Language Arts, I am fortunate enough to have many of these languages spoken in my classroom. My biggest challenge is finding effective ways to reach each child in the areas of reading and writing.

Some of the many programs available to students include Special Education, ESL Language Arts, Advanced Placement and Honors Programs, as well as The International Baccalaureate Program.

The majority of my time is spent teaching English Language Learners. Many of these students struggle diligently to achieve even minimal success when it comes to state mandated competency tests. In an effort to more closely align our curriculum with that of the common core, my classes have taken on even more rigor. Some of my students are unable to succeed. I believe that with a little support, through the use of programs that can be accessed through these tablets, my students can achieve more success.

My Project

I am requesting five Kindle Fire tablets that will be used in small group activities and to reinforce concepts already introduced. In addition, students who require special tutoring could use these in an after school tutoring program that the school has in place. I would like to download several apps and books that I believe will support and enhance student learning. Our school district requires students to take competency exams at the end of each school year. Traditionally ESL students have performed poorly on these tests and I have felt a great deal of frustration in finding new ways to approach them successfully. Students will use these materials to improve reading and writing skills in an effort to increase year-end competency scores.
