My students are age ranged from 14 to 22 years old in a high school setting in Spring Branch, Texas. They are all in a self-contained special education unit where we teach essential academics and life skills. They all have "abilities" varying from very high needs to milder social skills and intellectual opportunities. Each student brings myself and my staff a teaching experience. They have taught me many things, but mostly they have taught me love and compassion. These high school students are not so different from many of your a-typical high schoolers; they exhibit the same wants and needs for companionship and care. The difference is that they have may have different hurdles to overcome for an independent life. Myself and my staff are here to guide them and help them overcome these hurdles to the best of their abilities. Many people say that it takes a special person to do the job that I do, but I am here to tell you that I am the blessed one in this situation.
My Project
Students with special needs have limited abilities with learning and daily functions. These tablets can assist with reading, communication, and other educational areas! As a special education educator I have a high need of implementing and tracking student IEP goals daily. Electronic devices would assist with the process and make it more efficient to help pinpoint the areas of need my students have! By tracking data I am able to see growth and areas of need for each student. Tablets also allow them to have a piece of independence. They utilize them to research by voice activations, or through touch, instead of having to be able to type and spell. Tablets are also utilized for communication; there are many applications that assist students with limited verbal skills to be able to communicate their wants and needs.
