I teach a class full of incredible, hard-working second graders. I work in a Title I, low-income public school, and many of my students come from struggling backgrounds. It is my goal to create a welcoming, encouraging, worry-free family environment where kids can learn and discover answers to their passions and daily questions.
My classroom has 24 big-eyed and willing students who are constantly striving for challenges and are involved in all areas of our learning.
I believe my students should be given every opportunity to achieve. For many of my students, school is their only time to interact with today's newest technologies.
My Project
My students will primarily use the three tablets during small group instruction, allowing students to access literacy and math apps tailored to their needs for enjoyment and engagement in education. Students will also use the tablets for research about passion projects of their individual interests, giving them the opportunity to teach the class and have answers to all those questions that second graders have. "How does the habitat of a turtle differ from being in a tank to being in a pond?", "What causes lightning and thunder and why does it happen often in my town?", "Where does the water we drink from the faucet really come from?", and many more. Our school incorporated the 4'Cs, and the tablets will help meet all four: critical thinking, communication, creativity, and collaboration.
These tablets will drive their imagination and encourage their creativity.
Students will also gain technological experiences that they wouldn't normally get anywhere else. In math centers, students will use the tablets to practice counting, addition and subtraction facts, coin values, and time. During literacy centers they will use the tablets for phonics skills, reading, and comprehension activities.
The jobs of the future require advanced use of technology, and incorporating tablets in the classroom with enhance students' abilities to meet these challenges.
