"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction use choose." -Dr. Seuss
My privilege as a teacher is to develop students who aren't satisfied with the mundane. Instead, they grasp every opportunity to learn something new and be something better.
My students do not live lavishly.
Many have tough home lives, making school their sanctuary. At home, food may be limited. At school, they are all provided free breakfast, snack, and lunch so they aren't hungry. At home, parents are gone because they work multiple jobs. At school, students can come an hour before it evens begins so they have somewhere safe to stay. At home, the native language isn't usually English. At school, free after school programs and dedicated teachers assist students with homework when their parents can't so they can be successful. Despite their daily challenges, these resilient students come into the classroom every morning, smiling and ready to learn.
My Project
My students need 6 tablets with protective cases to promote technology use, active engagement, and individualized instruction during daily reading and math centers. With six tablets, every student will be able to practice math and reading skills in an exciting and engaging way every single day.
I am ecstatic about this opportunity for my classroom. There are so many apps available that provide rich learning experiences for kids. Whether students practice addition and subtraction in a game format or have real books read to them, these tablets are going to help keep students ready to learn. These students are used to sharing resources and taking turns. We will be so lucky to have enough tablets for each student when they reach the tablet center.
These children deserve the world and I want to open their eyes to that fact.
I want them to know that people care about them and that people believe they are worth it.
Our school can't afford these materials and neither can I. I know someone out there can help us. These children are our future. A little kindness and love towards them now will greatly impact their futures later.
