Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are lively, passionate, hard working and persistent; however, for many of them, reading hasn't come easy. Despite their challenges, for seventh and eighth grade special education and ENL students, they love to learn and are eager to be exposed to new topics, books and ideas. Our classroom is a traditional bridge, self-contained classroom. My students each have a variety of unique academic challenges, yet their passion to learn and their desire to absorb new information is shared by all of them.

The main challenge that my students face is gaining access to the materials that they need to be successful.

Our school is located in the heart of the South Bronx and as a result, all of my students qualify for free lunch and often lack access to the supplies they need to ignite their passions. Often, we are able to overcome these challenges with unique solutions; however, building a strong love of books and reading requires a bit more work. By supporting my students, you will be providing smart and engaged children with the resources they need to feed their minds and strengthen their love of reading.

My Project

My students love to read and have an ever-growing interest in new and exciting young adult novels. However, sometimes it's hard for them to be able to access the information they are interested in on their own. By having Fire tablets in our classroom, my students will have access to speech to text technology, which will bolster their ability to read grade-level text. It will also allow them to practice reading stamina by removing some of the barriers of struggling through a text.

Additionally, these tablets will allow for students to access educational applications that could support them in all subject areas.

Many times, my students struggle with basic skills; by using applications that support and develop those skills, it will increase their ability to access grade-level materials.

Finally, these tablets can be used as an incentive for students to use after they have earned scholar dollars or as a way to reward students for good behavior, high achievement, etc...
