My Students

I became a teacher because I believe the most exciting and important work I can do each day is to help young people grow into lifelong learners. My learning experiences in school have been some of the best parts of my life, and teachers have been essential parts of my growth and development as a person. Like so many other teachers in my school, I do my best to offer my students engaging experiences to help them make discoveries and learn.

Even though many students in our school face poverty, trauma and chronic stress, they show up each day full of curiosity and questions about the world around them and how things work.

In science, our students learn to measure rate and speed, observe the physical properties of matter, collect data on weather, and study cells and genetics. They want to connect with the wider world, make meaningful contributions, and experience science concepts up-close.

My Project

Today’s students are confident and savvy when it comes to technology, but they often approach STEM learning with uncertainty. We can hook students on STEM with interactive online learning. These tablets will open doors to virtual science labs, research, data collection, and sharing.

Fifth graders want to connect with the wider world, do real “grown-up” work, and make a contribution; having a tablet in their hands for STEM learning puts students in the driver’s seat.

They’ll explore rich graphical presentations, including models, pictures, diagrams, and graphs. Interactive components in online STEM lessons engage students and pique their curiosity.

Online Research

With tablets, we’ll investigate topics using online collections of images, videos, and artifacts, such as TED-Ed videos, TED-Ed lessons, and the Smithsonian. Students can go on virtual field trips, visiting the Weather Channel or the Museum of Science.

Experiments and Virtual Labs

Tablets let students access virtual labs that lead them through virtual experiments, safely experiencing elements of a live lab at a fraction of the cost. Tablets also help with real-world science investigations. Free apps can turn our tablets into lab sensors, measuring light, sound, and rate. Gathering information, we’ll take pictures and notes on the tablet, adding to shared documents. As well, 130+ fifth-graders in our school will use the tablets on our annual STEAM day.

Citizen Science Projects

We’ll participate in citizen science projects, contributing data to projects such as the University of Maine’s Signs of the Seasons: A New England Phenology Project. Connecting via tablets, my students will see how they can make meaningful contributions to science.

Presentations, Projects, Sharing

With tablets, my students can share their thinking in podcasts or videos. We’ll share thoughts and ideas with an online video discussion board. They’ll have tons of options for creating multimedia projects, comics, books, and more.
