Do you remember those days of being huddled around a monitor with 30 other students to try to see a video that the teacher is trying to show the class. Imagine being able to watch videos, do research, word process your work, all on a handy dandy little tablet.
I am the proud teacher of 22 enthusiastic 4th graders whose love of learning has just astounded me.
We hail from the Bay Area of California where technology abounds. We are a multicultural class, whose families' come from all over the globe with nearly 50% of our students speaking another language. Our school is nestled in a beautiful neighborhood where we are just taking off on technology.
My students need four iPad tablets and keyboards to enable them to attain skills that are necessary for them to be successful in this digital age. Our students have been learning how to do research and understand different types of text and media. With the new common core having an emphasis on non-fiction, my students will be needing different ways to access this text. By analyzing videos, researching topics for essays, and learning to word process, my students will be able to keep up with their peers who have ready experience with technology. I am also hoping to teach students to show their learning through different modalities, including making movies, keynote presentations, as well as typing up their writing. Of course, iPads have a myriad of other uses, including helping students with learning differences access materials. Also, it can help hone other skills including math.
I cannot tell you the difference these tablets can make in our classroom.
The impact of keeping kids on the cutting edge of technology is something that is almost mandatory in education these days. Having these tablets will put the world at their fingertips and open up a whole new avenue of learning.
