This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help my students by giving them technology that will allow them access to our language software on a daily basis. Some students speak very little English and often times it is a challenge to give them what they need. This tablet will be used by the students to use the software daily.

Our school is a Title 1, high poverty school.

This means that the budget is limited and often times my students face not even having their basic needs met. Our school is across from apartments that have been chosen by Catholic charities as a relocation center for refugees. My students come from refugee camps and have waited a long time to get their chance at an education in the United States. My kids struggle with language and often times are even traumatized by what they have seen or been through. Some of my students are painfully shy and speak little English, and are very embarrassed to speak English. We have languages that are rare, such as Karenni, and are hard to find resources for. At times it is a struggle to meet their needs or understand where they need the most help.

My Project

This tablet will be used in conjunction with the technology we already have, which is a language software program that is able to asses a student's reading level and provide reading that is specific to their ability. Our classroom has one desktop that is a few years old and one laptop. The desktop is usually in use during instruction which leaves only one computer to be shared among my students. We as a classroom are trying to slowly but surely build our technology toolbox. Access to the tablets will allow me to work with small groups and let the students take turn using the program. This will give them a chance to experience and learn from technology, and allows me as a teacher to view their progress. It will enable me to provide more specific instruction to my students who do not speak much English and help them to to read passages they can actually understand. This tablet will be used everyday for the language software, Google translate and to watch learning videos.

Students that are struggling readers will get see their progress and will be motivated by earning points with the program.

The ability to read fluently is important to all subjects and has the potential to boost their grades and confidence. Their eyes light up and they love when they put something in Google translate and it helps by providing the English word for them and they can hear as much as they need to.
