Tables Over Desks: A First Grade Perspective!

My students need tables to encourage collaboration. In order for all students to have their own space at the table, our class would need four flower activity tables.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In our classroom, we are a family. My students come into my classroom and expected to treat each other with the same respect they would their families. Families sit together. Tables are much more conducive to the idea of a family than desks are. Throughout their school career, students will spend plenty of time sitting and working at a desk. First grade is not the place for solitude, but instead collaboration.

I teach at a Title I school in North Carolina where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My littles come from a low socioeconomic rural area in southeastern North Carolina. We are a very diverse class; my students come from all different walks of life. In my class, we "kiss our brains" and earn "smart beads" for making great choices! My students know what is expected of them and they strive to do their best each and every day. I'm definitely a proud teacher!

My Project

First Grader's need to communicate with their peers while working on different tasks in the classroom. As a teacher, I have always kept my desks grouped together in different arrangements, trying to make the most out of the space we have. But desk clusters become messy and cause pinched fingers, as children push their desks around. They also take up twice the amount of space it would take to comfortably seat 6 children at a table.

Adding tables to our classroom will make the seating more age appropriate.

Students will be able to sit more comfortably and spread out their items needed to learn. The tables will also allow students to work together in centers and small group activities without losing materials between the gaps in the desks.

Tables will greatly expand our usable floor space, which is important in a first grade classroom. Our classroom is cramped right now because of the number of desks in the room to accommodate all the students. My students love to spread out on the floor when working on certain tasks. We also use our carpet space for whole group instruction and morning meeting. By having tables instead of desks, we will have more floor space available to us.

The most important aspect of the tables is that the children can easily work together, share materials, and collaborate on projects without being in one another's personal space.
