My Project

Please help C. Middle School’s science club create an outdoor classroom. Students have been researching and contacting community members to create an outdoor space and change school policy to provide students with outdoor opportunities. Each year the science club picks a feature of the outdoor classroom to work on. This year, students identified seating/tables as the major challenge to outdoor learning. Currently, students sit on the ground, which is not an option in the muddy spring and early winter. Picnic tables would allow them to go outside in all seasons.

Having picnic tables would provide much needed seating for the outdoor class room and also enable students to have lunch outside.

Since many students spend much of their time indoors, providing an outdoor space for classes/lunch may realistically be the only time most middle schoolers go outside. Additionally, the tables will be used for school celebrations, reward times, activity periods, and club meetings. This project keeps giving for years to come as future students will continue to use the tables and expand the outdoor classroom.

Next year club members will host fundraisers to raise money for paint for the tables, outdoor white boards, and other supplies. They will work with the community to schedule volunteers for outdoor lunch supervision and create a rotating schedule for classes to share the space.

Through diligent research, students have learned about the many benefits of getting outside which include: lowering stress, blood pressure, and anxiety all while improving focus, memory, and sleep quality. Being outside also boosts the immune system so students are less likely to get sick and miss school. Outdoor time clearly has positive effects on education.
