My Students

In our little town, we like to quote our most famous citizen, Helen Keller. She once said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Boy, is this true in our classroom! We spend a lot of time working in groups.

Our school is a Title 1 school, with 61% of the students receiving free or reduced lunch.

The majority of the students come from very low socioeconomic backgrounds. My 25 students are a very diverse group of learners. They have a lot of things going on in their lives besides school. Some are from single parent homes, some live with grandparents, and some bounce from home to home. I know that school is sometimes the last thing on their minds, so I try to make their time at school as enjoyable and valuable as possible. They really enjoy working cooperatively, and I try to make that a priority when planning my lessons.

My Project

We do currently have our desks in groups, but it is a very uneven work space. Our materials are always falling through the cracks, and when one student moves his or her desk, all of the other desks get moved. Tables would give my students the space to work cooperatively without the problems caused by their desks. My students love to make charts, graphs, and posters to demonstrate what they have learned in Math, Reading, Science, and Social Studies, but they can’t do that at their desks. Whenever we do projects like those, the students have to work in the floor. Sometimes I think we work more in the floor than we do at our desks! My students also really enjoy working on science projects, but it makes me very nervous to get out science supplies with such an uneven and unsteady work space. It would be so great for them to have the space to work hard on these projects without having to search for floor space every time we go to work on something.

With tables, my students will no longer have to work in the floor whenever they design posters or make charts.

They will also have more opportunities to work on big science experiments once we have a steady and even work space. The tables will be used all day and will be beneficial in every subject. Most importantly, the students will be able to spend more time working together, which will give them the cooperative skills they need to be productive members of society.
