I teach in a small town in Texas with a population a little over 2,000. I have the privilege of teaching 18 of some of the best 7 and 8 years old kiddos my school has to offer. They challenge me to be my best every day, and I want to give the same back to them. While our town takes care of each other, there are some things that are out of our control . . . like a natural disaster.
Last year, Hurricane Harvey made a big impact on our small town; we saw large amounts of property damage and overall stress to our community.
We saw our town come together in the most amazing ways, but in many areas, it has drained extra resources.
My Project
So why tables and crates? I find my responsibility as a teacher is to not only teach my kids about academics but sometime, more importantly, to teach them about life. While the workplace for many of them is some years off, I think a critical skill of success for kids today is learning to work with others. Expecting them to work solo at their individual desks is not reality they will see in their future.
Allowing them to collaborate with the use of these tables will teach my kiddos to define their own ideas, assess their peers’ thoughts, and in some instances, learn how to agree to disagree but still remain friends.
(An odd concept in many adult relationships!!) While they may only be in 1st grade, my students carry quite a bit of cargo with them. The crates would be used to ensure the classroom still remains functional and safe while they are collaborating. With the tables and crates packaged together, the kiddos will be excited to learn a new way of working, but at the same time, you would be helping building awesome little adults.
