This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are diverse. The student body of our school represents various backgrounds, cultures and socioeconomic status. The students are eager to learn and go to great lengths to fulfill the promise of their education. Each student in our school community has a unique experience and requires an individual education.
Our students look to the school as a beacon of inclusion and access.
My students come to school from great distances around New York City because they believe our community is a place where they feel safe and accepted.
My Project
This project plans to bring the complete Ta-Nehisi Coates library to our students. Ta-Nehisi Coates is a unique voice for schools today. He has written important essays on race in American as well as Marvel's Black Panther. Both advanced students and struggling readers can understand and analyze the various important themes in these works.
African American students are underserved in most school environments.
Our classroom libraries lack contemporary African American authors as well as graphic resources for African American students with special needs. Ta-Nehisi Coates' works fulfill both these needs. His work is absolutely essential for our students and we currently don't have them.
Contributing to this project will place Ta-Nehisi Coates' work in all of our English Language Arts classrooms. It will reach 750 students from some of New York City's most underserved communities. Our school is a Title I school that has a diverse population that needs these resources.
