My Students
Space: The Final Frontier -- To go where no Gettys' 6th grader has ever gone before. This will be the motto for my 8 - 6th grade exploratory classes this year. Our new science based exploratory class will introduce my rural community 6th grade students to the amazing world of flight and space.
What I love the most about my classes is being able to expose my students to "science beyond the textbook" and opening their eyes to all the incredible ways science is in our world.
With over 70% of my students coming from Free & Reduced lunch programs or other state assistance programs, my classroom is their best opportunity to be exposed to science beyond the traditional model.
My students are traditional a mix of cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. My classes are typically a 60% female to 40% male ratio. Our district offers "school choice" and 20% of my students "chose" Gettys over their neighborhood school. Our program follows the PLTW program. Gettys has been awarded PLTW Distinguished School award 2 years running. In 2019, I was named an Outstanding PLTW Gateway Educator and I am our District’s 2019-20 Teacher of the Year.
My Project
Students? Good to Go! Lessons on Flight? Good to Go! Outdoor space for launches? Good to Go! Rockets & Fuel? - No Go! Out of stock!
This project provides my 6th grade students the opportunity to gain first hand experience with design and engineering experience along with application of science principles regarding flight and space.
As tactile learners, my students gain more and remember more through hands-on activities and lab experiences.
With these kits, all of my flight and space students will have the opportunity to build a team rocket and test launch at least twice to achieve maximum launch height.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
