Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I've found that chemistry students into my low income high school are highly engaged when I integrate technology in my lesson plan. Core concepts in chemistry are often abstract for students that have not developed imaginative thought processes. Without cutting edge (and incredibly expensive) instruments, a person cannot physically see atoms or chemical bonds; high level mathematical reasoning is needed to understand electron density and molecular interactions. As you may have guessed, my classroom neither contains cutting edge imagining instruments or students that have mastered college-level math. Why does this matter? The teenagers I teach have a tendency to become frustrated and are tempted to give up as soon as elucidation of a concept becomes difficult. In short, motivating them to maintain focus is more than half the battle. The audience response system I'm requesting you help me integrate in my everyday teaching will motivate my rising chemists to break through the frustration barriers inherent in the learning process. Every class period transitions from rote note-taking and traditional classroom activities to critical thought about strategically placed questions throughout the lesson. During our unit on nomenclature, which is typically described by my students as boring, I will be able to pose a multiple-choice question for the class to answer. Each student then assumes the role of game-show contestant and answers by simply clicking a button on his/her wireless controller. With instantaneous feedback via the projection software...voila, a motivated classroom emerges. Your support will ensure that my students are engaged in every lesson. Gone will be the days of boredom; instead, chemistry becomes a video game. And if learning is a video game, it really is the best experience ever.
