My Students
My intensive needs students live in northern Wyoming, in an isolated desert town of a population of 1,700. The families who come and go are part of the working class--railroaders, bentonite plant operators, sugar beet farmers, waitresses, and cattle wranglers. They cannot afford to go to center programs (often far away) and don't want to separate the family for this. I'd love to bring the wealth of experiences from center programs to our little public school.
I plan on introducing a mobile coffee service with intensive needs kids at its helm.
The coffee cart will serve our teachers (true everyday heroes). It will promote inclusion by making our students visible, valued, and will encourage socialization more than ever before. It helps with listening skills and our cooking projects will have purpose! Scones and cookies are hard to pass up! Following directions, job skills, sorting, money skills...the cart incorporates things we work on each and everyday and then, credits the kids who work so hard on them.
We have recently learned the power of togetherness. Our coffee cart will bring together folks of all walks of life, promoting synergy, the sum of parts creating a better whole.
My Project
The materials on my list will help us get a really good start to our coffee business. The students will learn how to measure out and ground coffee beans, brew coffee, set up a coffee cart, display baked good and package these up in bags with a jam packet, butter, and disposable knife. Once the cart is ready, then off we go! We will take our cart from room to room on certain days and ask our teachers if they'd like a coffee and/or treat. The students will practice social skills and, just pushing the cart will serve as physical therapy for some. The coffee urns are designed for safety. Students must only pump the coffee into cups. Staff can add their own frothed milk and flavoring. Students then learn money skills. The money made will ultimately go back into the business, keeping our scone supplies on hand and refilling cups, etc. we may need in the future.
