This is a typical day in the Transition Life Skills classroom: Ellie runs up to my truck window and, before I can even get out of my truck with my big teacher bag, she tells me that there are only 13 days until Santa comes. She is 13 and has a chromosomal disorder that leaves her mind at about a 6-year-old level. A Peter Pan in a pretty pink coat. Her excitement is contagious. Neil meets us at the door. Asperger's Syndrome leaves his mind not quite able to see things as grey. It really bothers him that Ellie believes in Santa, so he tries to "help" her by explaining for the umpteenth time that Santa is not real. She is undeterred. Tia plods in, one foot in front of another as she precariously balances with the aid of her walker. She's 20 and walked with her class last year after receiving her Certification of Completion. Our center is located in the high school and she's been wondering lately what her place is now that her peers have gone out into the world without her.
