This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children living in poverty often do not get educated on health and nutrition. Our study of yoga and health focuses on empowering students to become pro-active in the forming of their future.

We are a title one school with 95% os our students living in poverty.

Five years ago we were a failing school and decided to make a radical change - we became a school of the arts and added dance and drama to our student's weekly schedule. We have made great progress on many levels - academic, social and behavioral.

My Project

Introducing the concepts of self awareness, discipline, endurance and flexibility can be challenging to this population who struggles academically, socially and physically. They are unaware of attending after school classes and camps, and tend to be impulsive and lack reflection on a bigger picture. By introducing the discipline of yoga, and giving them their own personal space/mat to practice on will provide the resources to help them feel empowered and confident to work hard.

It's a simple project, developing a strong body and mind.

One that in this climate where obesity, fast foods and lack of physical exercise are characteristic of children living in poverty, is much needed. Thanks for any help you can give.
