My students come from diverse backgrounds and that provides us with wonderful learning opportunities. Some of my students have special needs, and others are gifted learners. We also have children from military families, as well as some who speak English as a Second Language or English Language Learners(ESL/ELL). We are very fortunate to have such a beautifully diverse classroom community.
Although our school is faced with an increasing number of students from low-income families, my students are highly motivated to solve problems and make the world a better place.
My students are the scientists, artists, engineers, and mathematicians of the future. They care about others and want to make a difference in the world. I can't wait to see the amazing things they accomplish in their lives!
My Project
My students will use the us the clock-making kits in our classroom makerspace to extend their understanding of symmetry. Our class is about to begin a study of the roles of insects in our planet's ecosystems. We will observe and discuss adaptations including camouflage and mimicry. We will also be able to see examples of symmetry in nature. With that in mind, they will use the clock-making kits to build their own battery-powered clocks. They will apply their knowledge of angle measurement and fractions to place the numbers on the correct places on their clocks. Then, they will decorate the clock faces with designs inspired by their exploration of symmetry.
True learning is demonstrated by the ability to transfer information to a new situation.
With your help, my students will be able to create new ways to show their understanding of insects, symmetry, angle measurement, and fractions in one fantastically fun project.
