My students love math! They enjoy the hands-on nature of many of our units and it is a language students of all backgrounds can understand. We are starting our math units on 3-D shapes and fractions.
I realized that we do not have a lot of materials or resources to teach 3 dimensional shapes.
Students need to hold and touch these shapes to figure out for themselves how many faces, edges and corners the shapes have. By building with these shapes and being able to unfold their structures, they can see how the shapes work together to make a 3-D shape.
We are also heading into our fractions lessons. If students have fun and engaging puzzles to reinforce these concepts, they have a much higher chance of retaining the information. Having vibrant and hands-on materials will bring geometry and fractions alive for my students and form a solid foundation for their future learning.
