Sylvia Plath Poetry Recitation and Study

Help me give my students mirrors for practicing poetry recitation and public speaking, The Bell Jar, to deepen their understanding of Sylvia Plath's poetry, as well as the poetry book, Birthday Letters written by Plath's husband.

My Students

This project will benefit approximately 105, 10th grade Advanced Placement (AP) Literature students in my diverse, urban classroom. Coming from all cultures and walks of life, they are curious, lively, smart and unbelievably motivated. Students enroll in this advanced class because they chose to do so. It is a difficult class, and for most, is their first experience with learning how to think. They are used to memorizing materials and spitting answers out on tests, but this class teaches them how to analyze and reason. We practice critical reading, thinking and discussion and it is amazing to see how students open up, discover how smart they are and learn how to express themselves intellectually. Literature teaches history, human thought and reasoning and exposes them to different perspectives and ways of life. They love it. I do too.

My Project

After studying a unit of Sylvia Plath's poetry and viewing the biographical film, "Sylvia", many students are hungry for more. Being able to provide them with copies of Plath's novel, The Bell Jar, will keep them engaged and learning about poetry.

I am attempting to build an AP library of literary classics, and this book needs to be part of it.

As an urban ,diverse, financially struggling high school, our book budgets have been slashed to zero. At one time there were copies of "The Bell Jar", but the paperbacks fall apart after heavy usage.

You will notice that I am also asking for small mirrors and wonder why. Part of this class is for each student to select and perform one classic poem from the poetryoutloud.org website. It is a competition, with the top two recitations from each class going on to school finals, and conference competition. We will use the mirrors as a very effective training tool for recitation and public speaking.
