This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a class of seven students with severe and profound mental and physical disabilities. The students range in age from six to nine. All of the students are nonverbal, five are in wheelchairs, and three have low vision. Other disabilities they have include epilepsy, cerebral palsy, Dandy Walker Syndrome, Down Syndrome, and developmental delays,
This is a new classroom, just opened this year. We have been working all year to get the supplies needed to maximize student learning in the classroom. Unfortunately, we have not been able to get the "extra" supplies and equipment to enhance the learning process.
We have a brand new desktop computer in our room, and now just need switch accessible software. The students love to participate in activities, especially those with sound, lights, and movement. This helps to increase their alertness, increase movement, and encourage communication through the use of a switch.
With this software, the students in my class can access the computer and computer games that are age appropriate and motivating to them. This will provide endless reinforcement for the students. The smiles on their faces when they can independently complete tasks such as this are priceless.
