Imagine being unable to move your limbs, unable to hold a pen, access your ipod, or blend a smoothie without someone helping you. My students need this equipment so they can begin to gain independence as they reach adulthood.
Many of my students have orthopedic impairments or other disabilities that limit their fine and gross motor skills.
But one look in their eyes can tell you just how much these kids understand and want to participate in the world. They attend a public high school where they see general education students doing everything on their own--walking to class, talking, living their lives. Unfortunately, our state budget has fallen short and with budget cuts, obtaining the proper materials to give my students a chance at being as independent as their general education counterparts is difficult.
My Project
My students need these switches and switch-adapted activities so they can participate in a variety of activities both in the special education classroom and in general education electives. The addition of the drum alone will give students who otherwise sit and listen during music class a chance to actually participate. Students will learn when to activate the drum in order to be in time with the rhythm of the music. The switch for appliances allows students to be a part of home economics cooking activities without relying on adult or peer assistance for every step of the process. Students will learn to activate blenders and food processors to help prepare ingredients for the day. Students with special needs need to be as involved as possible in their school lives, and with these few items, we can make that happen.
Switch adapted activities and switches will enable my students to participate in a variety of music and cooking activities.
They will feel more involved in school simply by being given an opportunity for independence. Please help my students have more opportunities to participate in life.
