My Students

I am a teacher in a low-income district with over half of our high school students eligible for the free and reduced-price lunch programs. I find that my students are faced with many challenges. Many are routed to the high school from a very rural setting, often sitting on a bus for more than an hour in the morning before they arrive at school, ready for their classes. Despite these challenges, they are motivated, creative, insightful, and determined to not allow any of the challenges they may face hold them back from reaching their full potential.

Our public "small" high school in Oregon supports the dream that ALL students graduate ready to pursue a post-secondary education and become life-long learners.

Our small school model is driven by students establishing a positive, engaging, and inclusive community where they can explore their interests in interdisciplinary classes that encourage relevant and hands-on learning opportunities. We strive to support our diverse English Language Learner population and their language acquisition through interactive classes, scaffolded lessons and sheltered language instruction. Thank you for taking the time to get to know our amazing students.

My Project

I am requesting tablets for our English Language Learners to use during class. Translation apps are extremely helpful in aiding language acquisition and content comprehension. Our newcomers face many challenges, including high-school level courses in a foreign language and cell phones that have the potential to become social media distractions. To help alleviate some of the social pressures to engage, we want to provide our students with social media free technology that will help them gain access to the content they must master, as well as apps that can translate documents needed to complete essential assignments.

Typically, our students may use their primary language to demonstrate their learning, but they still struggle to access the content when it is not in their native language, particularly in content-heavy classes like my Biology course.

Translating documents into the various languages our students speak is often not feasible. Also, pre-printed materials like books, magazines, or science experiments are only found in English and are difficult to translate efficiently. Access to technology to aid in translation will not only support their learning, but also provide them with a distraction-free tool.
