Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our school is a public charter school near Detroit. Eighty five percent of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. We supply all of the instruments for our students to play in the band or orchestra. Our students are high achieving in spite of the economic challenges that they have. The graduation rate is in the high 90% range. The vast majority of graduates go on to college, a trade school or the military. Many of our alumni have continued to be involved in music beyond high school.

My Project

This project is to purchase new music for our jazz band. This year is a rebuilding year as we graduated some really strong seniors last year. Two of whom are pursuing jazz studies at university. This will allow us to perform some nice music for our Holiday Concert that is more aligned with the level of playing of our current students. The First Christmas Gig books are a collection of Christmas tunes arranged for Jazz combo. The other set is a collection of jazz standards arranged for vocalist and jazz combo. We would like to get this set to feature one of our trombonists who is also a great vocalist.
