Swing Therapy Support for Autistic Friends!

Help me give my students a hanging pumpkin loveseat chair that will undoubtedly become a staple sensory integration tool for all children. From increasing attention span to improving coordination, the benefits of a sensory swing are endless.

My Students

I am an elementary Life Skills teacher in a high poverty school. All of my students receive free lunch. We currently have 6 Life Skills classes in our building. There are over 40 students with a wide range of physical and developmental disabilities including Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, sensory or visual impairment and Autism. Our students require all academics to be modified and they access the curriculum through a variety of methods.

We have a big goal this year... to create a multi sensory learning center for ALL the classes to use.

This therapeutic room will allow children who are non-ambulatory to get out of their wheelchairs and explore materials safely. Students with limited vision will be able to access the light stimulation they require. Cause and effect activities will also be readily available for students working on those skills. Students with behavioral challenges can also use this room as a calming environment or for reinforcement.

My Project

Students who have been diagnosed with Autism typically have a difficult time filtering and organizing sensory input. This overflow of information puts stress on the nervous system, causing sensory meltdowns. Sensory input, like cuddling and swinging, calms the body's "fight or flight" response. Sensory swings make children feel safe, soothing their overly stimulated senses.

Sensory swings are a great addition to any sensory diet or sensory room!

This particular swing is unique in that it's shaped like a pumpkin and it also encourages "togetherness" as it comfortably seats two. This swinging loveseat will help to promote and encourage increased balance, coordination, and spaitial awareness while acting as a mood booster in what will most definitely become a calming outlet for all students.
