Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are 2nd graders living in New York City. Students in our classroom are eager and excited to have the chance to participate, learn, and develop skills in an area of physical activity and aquatics.
A great percentage of students in our classroom are economically disadvantaged and have limited opportunities to engage in many activities, including sports and physical activities.
Our students get a mere 20 minutes of recess a day and attend Physical Education classes only 1-2 times per week. Allowing them this extra chance to develop physical skills as well as learning to swim, a skill that most of our families couldn't afford to provide their children on their own, will be a something they will use and remember for a lifetime.
My Project
This year, our students have been given the opportunity to participate in a free swim program through NYC's AsphaltGreen. This program is dedicated to helping New York City residents of all ages and backgrounds live an active and healthy lifestyle through high-quality sports, fitness and aquatics programs.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths for children ages 1 to 14 years old.
In addition to being a matter of safety, swimming also provides children with an enjoyable physical activity. With childhood obesity reaching an epidemic level, this waterproofing program is one way to encourage a healthy lifestyle habit for New York City children and we are eager to help each and every one of our students participate.
