My students need 30 pairs of goggles for their weekly swimming class so they can go back to the classroom without teary, red eyes.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some students have no water experience when they come to swimming class in first grade. According to statistics compiled by the National Swimming Association 4 out of 10 black or Hispanic children can’t swim.

400 grade school children come to my “Learn to Swim” program each week.

This year’s fifth grade class started with me as first grade swimmers when I began teaching this program. These students will graduate with an intuitive comfort around water, strong water safety skills, and the self-knowledge “that they are swimmers.” Compare this profile with their peers in this city or any other. According to statistics compiled by the National Swimming Association 4 out of 10 black or Hispanic children can’t swim. At our public school, with sustained effort and commitment our students have made a significant dent in these unacceptable statistics.

My Project

For all students, using goggles while swimming helps them develop swimming skills faster and increases enjoyment by decreasing red chlorine eyes. My goggle collection gets used by all the swimmers in the school and needs to be replaced approximately every 6 months.

John Cruzat, USA Swimming’s diversity specialist says "If you don't teach your children to swim, you're putting your grandchildren at risk." This for me highlights the need to maintain a swim program that is funded properly so students regardless of income can participate.

It also illustrates that giving a 6 yr old swim lessons can increase the odds that future generations of his family be swimmers. This is my hope and my aim.
