Sweet Success: Fueling Positive Behavior with Candies

My Project

As we embark on a new school year, it's crucial to set the tone for success from the very beginning. My students, each with their own unique abilities and challenges, are eager to learn and grow. In my special education classroom, where some students are non-verbal and others are developing essential life skills, it's important to create an environment that not only nurtures their academic growth but also teaches them valuable lessons in financial literacy. At the start of the year, I introduce my students to the concept of earning and managing money, much like they will in the real world. Just as I earn a paycheck for my work, I explain to them that they, too, will receive "payment" for their efforts in class. This "payment" comes in the form of class money, which they can earn by demonstrating positive behaviors, such as helping others, staying on task, and meeting classroom expectations.

However, I recognize that elementary-aged children, especially those still developing intrinsic motivation, sometimes need a little extra encouragement to stay focused and engaged.

To keep them motivated and excited about learning, I allow my students to redeem their earned class money for various prizes, including their favorite candies. These sweet rewards not only serve as a fun incentive but also reinforce the financial literacy lessons they are learning.
