My Students

When you're hungry, you most likely are able to prepare food yourself without the help of someone else. This is a skill that most of us take for granted and don't think twice about. For my students, preparing food for themselves is not easy for a variety of reasons - inability to read & understand common vocabulary in recipes, meal plan and buy food, measure ingredients, or bake without something turning out raw, burnt, or inedible due to taste.

All students deserve the opportunity to learn basic cooking & baking skills.

My classroom is comprised of students in grades 9-12 who struggle to be completely independent with daily living skills. Without these skills, my students risk going hungry or living off of only prepackaged items that do not require cooking or baking of any kind if alone. My students are very hard workers and this classroom is their favorite. Wouldn't it be yours too if you were able to plan, prepare, create, and EAT with people who have become your family?!

My Project

My high school classroom is very unique. It is designed for our high school students who have the most significant academic needs. Our main focus is working on their daily living, social, and entry level job skills. Our hope is to arm them with the necessary skills needed to be independent adults once they graduate or move on from our school district. Our classroom is located in the old Home Ec. room so we have four kitchenettes where we practice basic cooking and baking weekly. This is why we need four sets of everything - the students are paired up in the kitchens and each kitchen needs its own set of tools & utensils. The materials we are using now have been in this classroom for literally decades and have become so worn that they are difficult to work with for ANYONE, let alone students with special needs. Our classroom also runs as a "catering business" and every month, we cook or bake an item to be sold to our community (Ex: Chicken Pot Pies and Cinnamon Rolls).

By donating to our project, you will help my students learn how to be independent in the kitchen and feed not only themselves, but others as well.

Our catering business is the perfect opportunity for them to work on life, social, and job skills while they interact with their community. With the money that they make, they are able to take a mini "vacation" to celebrate all of their hard work throughout the school year.
