Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come to school everyday full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what the day has in store for them. As energetic and willing my students are, they are lacking some necessary everyday things hat many take for granted. Almost all of my students are from low-income households. A large chunk of my students also have little to no support at home. Many of my students have younger siblings to care for at home and lack a private, quiet area to study.

I work at a Title 1 school where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

My students often struggle to have their basic needs met such as clothing, food, transportation and school supplies. Although my students lack so many vital necessities, they still to school willing and ready. I want my students to understand that being prepared and willing to commit to class with a positive attitude is appreciated and valued. I also want my students to be in an environment that prepares them for high school, college, and beyond.

My Project

My English Language Development class are working in their notebooks daily to practice writing in English. This notebook is pivotal to their success in my English class, but also in their other core subjects. We use the notebook to write down daily phrases they might need to communicate to others on campus, a place to free-write, and a tool that allows communication between myself and the students. In addition to the notebooks, we will be using colored pencils to annotate texts.

A Writer's Notebook is a safe space for my students to write their inner-most thoughts and understandings.

It also is a crucial tool that is used in the classroom daily.
