Imagine students reading and enjoying it! Some students are curled up with pillows, some in comfy chairs, and some at their desks. All of them reading! That's the magic of an awesome book like Swear to Howdy. It's the sort of book that grabs your attention and holds on to it to the last page. This is the story of two boys who find themselves in one adventure after another, who find themselves learning to navigate growing up, and who find themselves at the center of an accident that claims the life of a sibling. These boys have tough choices to make. My students also face tough choices, and I want to give them role models like these boys: boys who take accountability for their actions. Not only is the story a vehicle for contemplation and discussion, but the writing is one that we can study. Through mini- lessons, students can use Swear to Howdy to find examples of figurative language, to analyze sentence structure, and to examine word choice. With 35 copies of this book, the 100 Sixth graders in my Language Arts classes will read and laugh and cry and learn. Then, we can pass the book on to other Sixth grade classes and more students will benefit!
