Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a career academy high school where students take core classes of English, math, science and history in the academy they’ve enrolled in, but they can take specific career oriented preparatory classes. Students can get the fundamentals in their individual learning style while exploring career options. My aquatic science class is an upper level, yearlong project based science course that is real world applicable. Students will gain an overall understanding of aquatic ecosystems including saltwater and freshwater ecosystems. They will also learn about the flora and fauna found within them. They will learn about the geological formations that form the Earth’s oceans & rivers, and the effect these bodies of water have on weather and climate. Students will also acquire the necessary skills, responsibilities and knowledge to be good stewards of freshwater and marine environments.
I always tell my students that we must be good stewards of the aquatic environment.
During one of our class discussions about the aquatic environment I asked my students “if they believed that wars to come will be about water and not oil”. As I watched their body language as they pondered the question, I knew that they had never thought about it.
My Project
Students will use the aquariums to assimilate fresh water aquatic environment. They will compare and describe adaptations that allow a variety of organisms to exist in aquatic environments. Classes will observe and describe how different aquatic environments support different varieties of organisms. Students will classify and make accurate labeled drawings of their group’s aquatic specimen.
This project will allow my students to understand why it is important to take care of the aquatic environment.
By donating the equipment we need for this project you will have allowed my students to understand that sustaining the aquatic environment is valuable for all living things to survive.
