Sustainable Urban Gardening: Using Hydroponics for Hawaiian Self-Sufficiency

Help me give my students experience with urban and indoor gardening in my Botany class.

My Project

More than 85-90% of produce is shipped into Hawaiian markets. Becoming more self-sufficient is an imperative for the whole state. Learning hydroponics and aquaponics can help mitigate Hawaii's lopsided import dependency. As well as help individuals save money, it is the practical application of basic biological processes that everyone is supposed to learn in high school. It incorporates environmental concepts on a smaller scale in an urban setting. My students' semester-long project is monitoring and charting the growth of their plants. It culminates in harvesting and eating at the end. These hydroponic growing system designs are meant to take up less floor space by exploiting unused vertical space. Having the skills and knowledge for these small scale home gardens will directly benefit everyone.
