Your generosity has already made a meaningful difference for my students.\r\n\r\nWe are using the air purifier daily to create a healthier and more comfortable learning environment. Several of my students have allergies or sensitivities, and the purifier has helped keep the air fresh and reduced distractions. The board games have been incorporated into math centers and enrichment time, where students practice critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving in a fun and engaging way. One of our favorite moments was during a small-group activity when students worked together to solve a strategy game—encouraging each other, celebrating wins, and learning from mistakes.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, they were excited and curious. They asked questions about how the air purifier works and eagerly wanted to try the new games. Their enthusiasm reminded me how powerful new resources can be in motivating students and creating a positive classroom culture.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue using the board games as part of our weekly learning stations, connecting game strategies to math and logic lessons. We are also beginning a unit on problem-solving and collaboration, and these games will be a key tool in helping students practice these skills in real-life scenarios. So far I have provided students with backpacks and reusable water bottles, school supplies, snacks and even tangible rewards or trinkets to keep them encouraged and uplifted! They become elated when I say there's no need to borrow, because they can have one, with an eraser color of their choice along with a pencil sharpener! It's been a blessing to provide for students in this way. It's even more of a blessing to know that students feel supported and confortable to come to me for help. One of the cool things I've did was create a small station near my desk. Students know that the station is free for them to use and take what they need. This station hosts a box of snacks, pencils, erasers, books to borrow that help build mental fortitude on topics like change and belonging, and paper notebooks with perforated edges that they may keep for themselves. Because many of my students have historically struggled with reading endurance, this text is a vital tool for teaching contextual vocabulary building and inferential reasoning. Matt de la Peña's fast-paced narrative allows us to practice \"active reading\" strategies—such as stop-and-jot predictions and character mapping—without the students losing interest. By using a contemporary, high-interest survival story, I am able to teach complex literary skills like analyzing social commentary and narrative arc in a way that feels relevant and accessible, ensuring students meet grade-level standards through a supportive, manageable lens.\r\n\r\nIn our small-group setting, reading is no longer a passive or intimidating task; it is a collaborative exploration. For students who have previously felt \"left behind\" in larger English classes, these new books provide a sense of belonging and success. I've witnessed several students, who were initially hesitant to pick up a book, now leading our daily discussions because they see themselves reflected in the protagonist's resilience and background. Reading in this classroom looks like students huddled together debating survival strategies or using graphic organizers to track plot twists. Your donation hasn't just provided books; it has provided my students with a \"win\" in literacy, helping them build the confidence they need to see themselves as capable readers and critical thinkers.\r\n\r\nOne of the most moving moments this semester involved a student named Keoni, who has traditionally found it difficult to engage with written texts. While reading this maritime tale, Keoni shared that for the first time in his life, he could \"see\" the text as if it were a screen, using his mind's eye to visualize the action just like a movie. By aligning the story with a cinematic perspective, he moved beyond just reading words to truly experiencing the narrative. This breakthrough—finding enjoyment in the \"mental movie\" of a book—is exactly the kind of milestone your generosity makes possible for students who are rediscovering their potential as readers.","fullyFundedDate":1759423972985,"projectUrl":"project/building-confidence-through-pacific-isla/9775395/","projectTitle":"Building Confidence Through Pacific Island Books","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Alofaituli","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9702410_orig.jpg?crop=707,706,x0,y172&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1725903863479","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9702410"},{"teacherId":9372468,"projectId":9925627,"letterContent":"My students are the best.
