Each class period students would write a journal entry summarizing the passages we read that day with the following prompt: \r\n\r\n\"Somebody\" is the main character, \"Wanted\" is their goal, \"But\" is the problem or conflict, \"So\" is how the character tried to solve the problem, and \"Then\" is the resolution or outcome.\r\n\r\nThe students were able to connect the broader trends of the French Revolution to a real person of color that benefitted from it greatly. Often the French Revolution is presented as excessive and chaotic (it was). But there were definite winners. The enslaved people in the French colonies were liberated. Slavery abolished. The Black Count provides a helpful bridge between the French Revolution in France and the French revolution in the Caribbean.\r\n\r\nI use the audio on speaker and the students follow along with guided notes.","fullyFundedDate":1759241611712,"projectUrl":"project/what-we-can-know-help-enliven-history/9772565/","projectTitle":"What We Can Know: Help Enliven History!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Denninghoff","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9213439"},{"teacherId":9967551,"projectId":9779370,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous contributions towards our classroom. Students were excited to have multiple colors to use in our whiteboard review game and in a group activity - they liked the variety and commented on how easy these markers were to write with and to erase. Sometimes erasing on the whiteboard is challenging, but these markers wipe clean, which they loved, especially in the review game when they were racing each other to answer questions. It's really the little pleasures sometimes, as the first class to use the markers were excited to be \"the first class\" to write with those markers.\r\nWe also managed to have our supplies in a more orderly and easy-to-use organization with the addition of the storage drawers and storage containers. Students now know exactly where to go to utilize our colored pencils, markers, scissors, and glue, amongst a few other supplies. They also know where supplies go so it makes clean up much easier too. \r\nHaving access to the locked wooden file cabinet has also allowed me to securely store confidential files and items. And frees up more space to hide away the hundreds of textbooks that are stored in our classroom. Because of it, learning increased for many students that often struggled in the class. The kids were delighted not only from the incentives but just being able to help each other out.\r\n\r\nWe want to be able to continue this each year as we see the power of building this type of culture in our school We can't thank you enough for allowing to support our students as they learn to help each other out.","fullyFundedDate":1742047677812,"projectUrl":"project/2025-loko-maikai/9161872/","projectTitle":"2025 Loko Maika'i","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Cabanting","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8831069"},{"teacherId":9967551,"projectId":9161493,"letterContent":"The new resources have been a lifesaver to keep my classroom and my students more organized. Students from my previous school year stopped in and commented they wish we had the lamp and the extra bookshelf last year because they like how it adds to the classroom ambiance. We're so appreciative of your assistance in making this classroom feel more welcoming and conducive to learning.\r\nThe whiteboards with the erasers and pens have allowed students to participate in group reviews, and they're really excited when they get to use whiteboards and markers to do this. It has helped us to be more engaged and allows me to do many quick checks in student thinking too. Because of you, my students now have access to essential supplies like pencils, erasers, and snacks—and while these may seem like simple items, they've made a world of difference.\r\n\r\nHow We're Using the Resources:\r\nThese supplies have become part of our daily routine. Students are able to start their work right away without worrying about having a pencil or eraser, and that alone has helped us create a more focused and productive environment. The snacks have been especially helpful during long days or after testing when students need a little energy boost to stay engaged and comfortable.\r\n\r\nStudents' Reactions:\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, there was genuine excitement—especially about the snacks!
