"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a HABIT." ~ Will Durant. We are a Title I school in Virginia with 680+ students in Pre-K through 5th grade. Our school is beautifully diverse with a transient population, brimming with eager and deserving students who are working hard to reconnect as we establish safe and warm environments for learning. Our students are resilient, despite many barriers, and strive daily to find connections as peers and to develop habits that will propel them in their relationships and learning.
Through the generosity of donors on this site, the integration of WonderGrove Learn web-based videos and resources will enhance our students' school experience, eliminating economic barriers and allowing all children access to social/emotional skills and Habits of Mind strategies to be successful in life and learning.
My Project
WonderGrove Learn digital resources and videos will help to develop a sense of community, self-care, and self-advocacy among our students, PK-5. Each video emphasizes one of sixteen Habits of Mind that promotes problem-solving and life-related skills necessary for effectively operating in school and society. Habits of Mind are dispositions that are skillfully and mindfully employed by characteristically intelligent, successful people when they are confronted with problems. Students will learn strategies and tools to navigate real-life situations and problems by equipping them with awareness, thought, and intentionally practiced strategies for gaining positive outcomes. Habits of Mind include Persisting, Managing Impulsivity, Listening with Understanding and Empathy, Thinking Flexibly, Thinking About Your Thinking, Striving for Accuracy, Questioning and Problem Posing, Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations, Thinking and Communicating with Clarity and Precision, Gathering Data through All Senses, Creating, Imagining and Innovating, Responding with Wonderment and Awe, Taking Responsible Risks, Finding Humor, Thinking Interdependently and Remaining Open to Continuous Learning. By offering these resources across the school, we are building a common language and common expectations for positive, productive behavior and learning as a caring and responsive community. Please help our worthy students get the SEL and academic support they need!
