Surviving in the Hawaiian Jungle

My students need these basic equipment to even the athletic playing field.

My Students

Our students/athletes live in the largest geographic area in the island of Hawaii. For most students, it takes 30 to 60 minutes to reach home from practice at our school. Our school's population falls in the lowest social economic category in the state.

They travel over unpaved roads with no street lights, and most extended families rent houses that are built in undeveloped Hawaiian native forests.

Most of our players on our football team wear shoes that are recycled through the team each year. They also practice with cheap footballs that our league does not use. And they also borrow hip, butt. and thigh pads that have been recycled over the years through the team.

Even with all these disadvantages, our student athletes never complain about the shortcomings of their circumstances. They push through and keep practicing hard even though their competitors at other high schools have the means to purchase better equipment and supplies.

My Project

Our projects has 2 goals. One, encourage students to play football. Two, provide students who currently play football with a sense of pride that they own something and they practice with the same equipment that other high schools use.

A lot of our students don't participate in sports because they fear their parents cannot afford buy them the basic supplies needed for that sport.

The shoes donated provides relief to families because they do not need to buy another pair of shoes just for football. Most families can only afford to buy one pair of shoes for their children, and that priority is for shoes to wear to school. The girdles are another item that provides relief to students and their families. Forty dollars for a football girdle could also be spent for clothing or to fill the family car with gas because their daily commute averages 30 to 40 miles a day.

Finally, for players who have been practicing hard and working even harder in the classroom, they can earn a shoe or girdle to call their very own instead of using recycled equipment. The donated footballs will also provide players a sense of pride by giving them assurance that they are practicing with the same footballs as other high schools.
