My Students

Students can easily feel defeated by science from the start if they never use the scientific method to solve problems. Biology is a core class that everyone must take. Help us keep students engaged. Create a workforce that can jump at science careers when they graduate and not say, "That was too hard," or "I can't do that." Students love science when they do science experiments. Help us keep that alive in this tough economic time.

These aspiring high school students dream of becoming doctors, dentists, nurses, pathologists, coroners and research scientists.

My 9th grade science students attend an urban school and over 50% qualify for free or reduced lunch. Despite all the overwhelming obstacles to finding success, these self starting students are part of a unique program that allows students to graduate high school with an associates degree and a high school diploma.

My Project

Help us measure how the genetics of populations change over time. In this hands-on simulation, students will use beans to represent the alleles of a rabbit population. Students will show how environmental pressures like predation by eagles will affect the survival rates of certain traits. This simulation helps students understand the work of Charles Darwin and gives an application of survival of the fittest. With 30 calculators and 3 packs of rulers, we can apply math skills to real world situations. When students see applications of algebra, they are more readily accepting of new concepts. I am also requesting 1 Calculator Caddy Stack to store the calaculators when they are not being used.

Nurture the desire to succeed!

Encourage student interest! Please help our students by providing hands-on science labs. You may be the difference in a disadvantaged student's life. Ninth grade is a crucial year. Studies show that those who receive all their credits in 9th grade have the best chance of reaching high school graduation. Help foster a love of science and learning.
