Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 6th grade teacher at an inner city Title I school. Many of my students come from low income households. Alternatively, we have a wealth of culture within the school. To tap into these cultures and the background of my students, I'd like to begin the school year with a theme that can be acknowledged by all of my students. That theme is Survival and Courage.I chose this theme, because I feel that all of my students can relate to and draw from the characters and their endeavors in the texts. Sixth grade is a time when children begin to mature into young adults and begin to develop courage and survival skills within themselves and their communities. Through reading and completing the various hands-on activities, we dive into the texts head first and come up for air with skills to show not matter what is thrown at us, we can survive. Within the theme, I cover the 4 fictional books I have requested. Throughout the study of these stories students are engaged in such activities as literature circles, the creation of picture dictionaries using the vocabulary presented in the various books, response to literature and a culmination unit celebrating the multiculturalism within our classroom with special end of the unit luncheon. My students will be learning more vocabulary, increasing their comprehension skills, learning about survival skills, important character traits and how to show their knowledge in a variety of hands-on activities. My class and I thank you in advance for you contributions. Without your financial assistance our study would not be possible.
