Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Being at our school for several years, I have gotten the chance to really get to know many of the students in the school, including those I have never taught. Many of them have gone through seriously adverse situations and misfortunes that impact their everyday life, especially their education. I am amazed at how resilient they can be, and how they push through to the best of their abilities regardless of hardships that affect them. Being a fifth-grade teacher has shown me how fast some students have to mature. I have taught their younger siblings in previous years (coming up from kindergarten and first grade) and see how they take care of their family. Each child that I have gotten to know at this school has my heart.
I want nothing but the best for all of these students, and that includes giving them hands-on experiences that will be memorable to them.
My students need to be able to feel like school isn't another one of their draining duties or work. I want all of them to enjoy school and look forward to each day in my class, whether in person or virtually. They truly deserve the best!
My Project
Virtual learning is hard. At least that's the message I get from my students often. No matter how engaging some lessons may be, some kids still find it really difficult to stay motivated. That's why I want to supply them with incentives that will encourage them to participate and put their all into virtual school.
I want to give my students more reasons to smile.
They have loved the surprise visits I've made to their homes with birthday bags and books, so it would be fun to reward them when they are doing an outstanding job by doing their best during these difficult times. Of course, the most proficient way of doing this is to give them what they want. When asking them what kinds of things they would like as incentives, they did not come shy with a list! Invisible ink pens, notebooks with lock and key, glow in the dark bracelets and sticks were some of the things they wanted for their virtual learning treasure box. I added some things that can come in handy for them too, like fun pencil sharpeners and modeling clay they could possibly use for art. I am looking forward to being able to deliver!
