My students need dissection consumables, due to the requested supplies being non-recyclable every school year. Most students at this campus haven’t had the experience of dissecting at all, let alone aquatic organisms studied in our class.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My wonderful school is an overpopulated urban high school in the Title I standings with about 90% free and reduced lunch. Almost the entire school is an at-risk population, so my students have bigger worries on their plate than simply making it through the school day.

I am determined to make a difference at my school and in my class by allowing students the opportunity that other schools and students get everyday.

It is time to make them more well-rounded and have more experiences with prepare them for post-high school careers and life in general.

My Project

Students will be using dissection utensil kits and specimens, such as the skate, to further their knowledge in anatomical structures of aquatic organisms. This will also allow students to compare and contrast these organisms’ adaptations to those found in terrestrial plants and animals or even those that are amphibious in nature. Given that more students have, yet, to travel to an ocean, sea, or bay, it is a rare experience at this school for students to get up close and personal with an animal that closely resembles a stingray, the skate. Students will have more reason to be engaged and will be offered a once-in-a-lifetime chance to truly study these amazing creatures.
