Students acknowledge that they don't stress when they forget something or can't afford things necessary for our class. They were all pleased to see the ample amount of pencils, the stock of first aid materials, and holders for their utensils to add things to their journals. The extra colored paper comes in handy each day, as I use them for the notes they can refer to when studying or doing their work and activities. It adds to the difference that is their math class. The players immediately felt a huge difference as they lifted the pieces to their desired locations.\r\n\r\nAs I showed them the new notation pads, they were excited to start taking down their games. We even had some students explaining the importance of notation in and out of tournament play. I hope that the books that were purchased with your donation will help grow the students' understanding of Chess whether they are beginning, intermediate or advanced. As I myself, am more of an intermediate player, this allows me to push those that are better than me and also leads me to get better.\r\n\r\nGoing forward, I hope to get a vertical teaching board that will assist with openings and end game situations. One of the many lessons I've noticed as something that I can build upon is teaching my students how to checkmate rather than taking all their opponents pieces off the board. The students especially appreciated the pencils and pencil dispensers as they can just grab one as soon as they walk into class. They know that they will have a pencil available in their math class.\r\n\r\nThe magnetic grid boards provided a great visual as students prepared for their STAAR test this past season. And the fidget toys were great rewards for students that won games and acted appropriately during the lessons taught in class.\r\n\r\nThe electric pencil sharpeners were a welcoming upgrade and are used daily. The students also appreciated the scissors that are more their size because we do many activities that require them to cut objects out. It has been an incredible experience to see my students get a glimpse into a world they knew very little about. There has been lots of laughter, some crying, and introspection. \r\n\r\nAP Lang is all about rhetoric, so we look at how authors write based on who their target audience is. We've analyzed how Trevor Noah crafts his storytelling to be appealing to a non-South African audience. We've talked about the choices he makes in his writing to give the \"characters\" in his story full complexity despite playing a minor role in his story as a whole. Students have been able to take what they've learned from reading the book and apply it to their own writing. \r\n\r\nAnother very rewarding aspect of reading this book is that it makes the students feel seen in a way I'm not sure they have before. There are lots of mixed-race students in my class, and many of them have commented on how happy they are to hear Trevor speak about the complexities of fitting into a culture when your own is more complicated that others' might be. Some of them relate to Trevor constantly feeling like his isn't \"enough\" of any part of his identity. I think the book has gone a long way in helping them realize that they're not the only ones dealing with these issues. The book also deals with difficult subjects like domestic abuse, alcoholism, myriad prejudices, attempted murder, and a host of other things are are hard to talk about, but Trevor Noah's writing makes it easier for young people to grapple with these subjects. \r\n\r\nTeaching this book has been a pleasure and one of the highlights of my career. It is all thanks to you and your support. Thank you so much for helping me read this book with my students.","fullyFundedDate":1726104874210,"projectUrl":"project/lets-read-born-a-crime/8687643/","projectTitle":"Let's Read Born a Crime!","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Harwell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9696255"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_8376","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2224,"numTeachers":154,"percentFrplEligible":82,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":25,"percentWhite":8,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":60,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":70.8,"schoolId":8376,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Karen Wagner High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Karen Wagner High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/judson-independent-school-district/karen-wagner-high-school/8376"}
